Montblanc 1858 Series Speed Chronograph OnlyWatch’17 Special Edition (Orphan)
Montblanc’s watchmaking history can be traced back to 1858, when Minerva was just completed. Since its inception in Villeret, Switzerland, Minerva Watch Factory has become a world-renowned Swiss watchmaking expert with its exceptionally accurate timekeeping function. For the past ten years, Montblanc has been committed to exploring the brilliant watchmaking traditions of Minerva, seeking endless creative inspiration from historical classic watch functions, mechanical processes and design specifications.
Inspired by the famous Minerva chronograph from the 1930s, Montblanc 1858 series chronograph OnlyWatch’17 special edition continued to write a legendary watchmaking journey, inheriting the soul of the brand in a new and modern way. Montblanc 1858 series chronograph blue limited edition (limited to 100 pieces) has won the 2016 Geneva Grand Prix (GrandPrixd’horlogerieofGeneva) Best Chronograph Award, with traditional Minerva MBM16.29 manual winding single button Features a chronograph movement. To pay tribute to it, Montblanc first paired the bronze case with a vintage green dial and dark green crocodile leather strap. The unique design is memorable. Montblanc Global CEO Nicolas Baretzki said: ‘Montblanc is proud to contribute a timepiece to OnlyWatch as a contribution to the study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and to help people suffering from this disease in the world at an early date. Get out of trouble. ‘
The beauty of bronze
Montblanc 1858 series chronograph OnlyWatch’17 Special Edition uses a 44mm bronze case, adding a retro design to the watch. By using metallic bronze, Montblanc harmonizes traditional Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship with authentic classic watchmaking materials. In addition, through research on bronze, it has been found that after years of wearing, this high-quality alloy material will gradually evolve into a unique, uniform and charming copper green. Small changes in the color of the case make this orphan timepiece more retro.
The new Montblanc 1858 series chronograph OnlyWatch’17 Special Edition features cloisonné-style hands with beige Super-LumiNova® coating, a gradient retro green dial, striking Arabic numerals, a nostalgic design crown, and a surround The dial’s classic track-type minute scale reproduces the classic design of the Minerva chronograph from the 1930s. The Montblanc logo above the dial is in the style of the brand in the 1930s: the text in historical fonts is inlaid with the MontBlanc peak pattern, and the strap is made by the Montblanc Pelletteria leather craftsmen in Florence, Italy The elaborate dark green crocodile leather strap with satin-finished bronze pin buckle details the vintage essence of the watch.
The ‘core’ of classic retro
At the heart of the Montblanc 1858 series chronograph OnlyWatch’17 special edition is a traditional Minerva MBM16.29 manual winding single-button chronograph movement with column wheel, horizontal disc clutch and ‘V’ chronograph clip Itabashi, fine-tuned balance wheel with large screws runs at a vibration frequency of 18,000 times per hour, with a power reserve of up to 50 hours. This precise timepiece is entirely hand-made by the watchmakers at Montblanc Villeret. The detailed polishing process presents an unparalleled beauty. Continuing the large-sized ‘pocket watch’ style, the design of Montblanc MBM16.29 movement was inspired by the original 17.29 pocket watch and watch movement designed by Minerva Watch Factory in the 1930s. The new movement is based on the structure of the 17.29 movement, and is supplemented with fine grinding treatments in different ways, such as chamfering, ‘Geneva ripple’ plywood and rotating circular patterns, making the movement more refined. The MBM16.29 movement uses rose gold parts, and the new look matches the bronze retro style of the watch in harmony. Like other Minerva movements, one of the movement parts is shaped into a small arrow shape of Minerva’s signature to commemorate the long and glorious watchmaking tradition of the Minerva Watch Factory.
The chronograph function is displayed by a chronograph second hand in the center of the dial and a minute timer at the ‘three o’clock’ position. The outer ring of the dial is engraved with a surrounding tachymeter scale, and the small seconds dial is set at the ‘nine o’clock’ position of the dial.
The back of this special edition orphan watch is made of hypoallergenic bronze-plated titanium alloy, and is specially engraved with the words ‘UniquePiece–OnlyWatch’17’, making it a veritable masterpiece of timepieces.
